A brief overview of student visa Australia 

Australia is home to quite a number of educational institutions dedicated to training the young minds of the generation. Most of them are world-renowned universities with internationally accepted degrees from all kinds of fields in society. Additionally, Australia has been the destination of a vast influx of students from all corners of the world coming to these universities in order to learn and excel in their subjects.

The Australian Student Visa allows students from around the globe to come and enjoy the rewards of being in the Australian education system as well as prepare themselves for the world and society that lies beyond the realm of education. However, there are various eligibility requirements that must be met before a prospective applicant can submit an appeal for an Australian student visa. I addition to the universities, Australia also holds the capacity to host international students who much younger in their school system as well. This option has its own requirements that need to be filled as well. The Student visa also allows holders of the visa to take their family along with them as long as the family members are the applicant’s partner or the child of the holder and their partner.

Student visa Australia – subclass 500

The Australia Student visa is meant for foreign individuals who are willing and able to utilize Australia’s education/Higher education system in order to develop the skills they need to use when entering society and for training and studying for their professional future.

When one becomes the holder of the Australian Student visa, one is capable of living and studying in Australia. Additionally, the holder of the visa is also able to work for 40 hours for two weeks once the course has begun. The holder will also be able to travel within Australia as well as travel abroad. This is a temporary visa that can grant a period of stay that is 5 years long. However, the duration of the stay is mostly determined by the type and the length of the course the applicant wants to follow. This differs for Primary school students (Years 1-4) who have a maximum period of up to 3 years.

If the holder wants to extend their stay, they may apply for a new Student visa. However, depending on the situation, the type of visa does not have to be another Student visa.

  • If the visa expired before graduation, you can apply for a Visitor visa but must also have a letter from your institute.
  • If you have completed certain qualification criteria, you can be eligible for a temporary graduate visa.
  • A recent engineering graduate may be eligible for the Skilled Recognition Graduate visa.

Eligibility 

To be eligible for this visa, there are a few criteria that have to be fulfilled depending on whether the holder is a school student or a university student

School students have to be 6 years or older to apply. Additionally, if the holder wants to;

  • Begin year 9, they have to be 17 or younger
  • Begin year 10, they have to be 18 or younger
  • Begin year 11, they have to be 19 or younger
  • Begin year 12, they have to be 20 or younger

The applicant must also provide proof that they have already enrolled in the course they want to follow or the visa request will be denied. This is known as a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). The applicant should be registered to a full-time course present in the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). If the applicant is applying for this visa from outside of Australia, then the CoE should be submitted along with the visa application. If on the other hand, the applicant is applying within Australia, then the applicant should already be enrolled in the course before applying for the visa.

Other requirements

If the applicants are under 18 years of age they must also have arranged proper welfare arrangements and has to provide information regarding those arrangements.

The student and their family members should also have adequate student health insurance for the entire period of stay within Australia.  They must be approved by an approved Australian health insurance provider via the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Applicants who apply from outside Australia must make sure that they arrive on the day that their OSHC insurance cover begins ad that they maintain it until the entirety of their stay in Australia has come to an end. Applicants who apply within Australia should already be covered by the OSHC. Failure to meet this standard will result in the rejection of the visa.

The duration of the granted visa is directly connected to the duration of the course the student wants to follow. And as such, it is a temporary visa. However, the maximum period granted for the visa is 5 years.

The cost of this visa is AUD 620 for the main applicant with additional charges for the family.

As for processing times, depending on the type of course, the processing times will vary.

  • Foreign Affairs/Defence sector: 38-65 days.
  • Postgraduate Research sector: 7-9 months.
  • Non-Awards sector: 52 days – 6 months.
  • School sector: 5-6 months.
  • Independent ELICOS sector: 5-6 months.
  • Vocational Education and Training sector: 4-6 months
  • Higher Education sector: 57 days – 5 months.
